What is Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery?
The area around our eyes is one of the areas that reveal our age due to the thin skin tissue it has and the muscle and adipose tissue that are prone to succumbing to gravity. In fact, most of the time, it doesn’t just reveal our age, it makes us look much more tired and older than we are because of the deformations it has undergone. Apart from the interruption of the aesthetic appearance, our visual function also begins to suffer, especially due to the deformations that occur due to aging.
Eyelids, which are the rivets of beauty and youthful looks, can cause us to experience many aesthetic and health problems over time. Considering that our face ages from top to bottom, we can say that the first place where the effects of aging appear is around our eye and then our eyelids.
From the middle of the 30s, when the collagen production in the skin decreases and the skin tissue begins to lose its elasticity, our eye area begins to encounter the problems caused by aging.
Herniation of the fat pads, drooping due to loss of elasticity in the upper eyelid, the appearance of wrinkles we call crow’s feet due to frequently repeated mimic movements, bags under the eyes, dark circles and more… It compels us to intervene around the eyes.
At the beginning of the 30s, non-surgical aesthetic applications such as fillings are sufficient, but when we approach the 40s, non-surgical aesthetic applications begin to be insufficient and rejuvenation operations around the eyes come into play.
In Which Cases Is Eyelid Surgery Applied?
There are two different types of eyelid plastic surgery, upper and lower. Upper eyelid plastic surgery is used in cases of droopy eyelids, herniation of fat pads and sagging of the eyelid skin at a level that prevents visual function.
It is applied to the lower eyelid in cases where non-surgical aesthetic applications such as under-eye light filling are insufficient for the removal of under-eye bags and dark circles.
Upper Eyelid Plastic Surgery
Upper eyelid plastic surgery is perhaps one of the most frequently used operations when it comes to rejuvenation of the eye area. It takes 45 minutes on average.It’s done under local anesthesia or sedation. If the patient isn’t overly anxious or stressed, general anesthesia isn’t used. There are two reasons for this. First, upper eyelid plastic surgery isn’t a comprehensive operation to use general anesthesia. Second, under general anesthesia, there’s no movement of the eyelids. Partial movement of the eyelid during the operation is one of the details that facilitates the course of the operation.
Upper eyelid aesthetic surgery, in which the surgical scar can be hidden very well thanks to the incision made from the fold line of the upper eyelid, is an operation in which the excess skin that accumulates on the eye and prevents the person from seeing is removed and the subcutaneous tissues are repaired. Excess skin is surgically removed by making an incision from the fold line of the eyelid. Afterwards, the operation is completed by suturing and placing small bands on the operation area. It is a short and comfortable operation.
Lower Eyelid Plastic Surgery
It is an operation that takes a little longer than upper eyelid plastic surgery. It takes about 1 hour. Sedation or local anesthesia is used also in lower eyelid plastic surgery. Since the surgical incision is made from the bottom of the eyelashes, the surgical scar is hidden very well. In lower eyelid plastic surgery, the bags and fat pads that cause deformation under the eyes are repaired, the skin is stretched, and the excess skin is cut and surgically removed. Then the operation is completed with the sutures. At the last stage of the operation, small bands are attached to the operation area and the area is completely protected.
Eyelid Surgery Preparation Process
Although eyelid operations are comfortable and completed in a short time, they are operations that require a certain preparation process.
Patient candidates who apply to us for eyelid aesthetic surgery are first examined in a consultation and we determine the details of the operation.
Does the person really need eyelid plastic surgery or can their complaints be resolved with non-surgical injection procedures?
Does the person only need eyelid surgery or does another intervention such as mid-face lift is needed?
Are the age and medical history of the person suitable for eyelid plastic surgery? Do they have a condition that prevents them from getting anesthesia?
Consultation, where answers to all these questions are obtained, is the first step of eyelid plastic surgery. Candidates applying for the operation should not have any obstacles to receiving anesthesia – which is clarified by the examinations requested during the consultation – non-surgical aesthetic applications should be insufficient to relieve complaints and their age should be suitable for the operation. If you ask why age is so important, although the skin renews itself at certain intervals, its regeneration slows down, especially when approaching the age of 40. This makes the skin vulnerable to aging. The results of eyelid aesthetic surgery at an early age are long-term. However, since the skin is a living tissue and the person continues to be exposed to gravity, mimics and environmental factors, the function of the operation may be lost in later ages and the person may have to undergo surgery again. For this reason, eyelid aesthetic surgeries should always be the last choice and should be performed towards the age of 40 if possible.
In addition to the steps mentioned above, if our patient candidate uses blood thinners, they should stop using these drugs 10 days before the operation. In addition, during this period, the use of additional vitamin supplements and herbal teas, especially green tea, should be suspended.
Another habit that needs to be taken care of and stopped is smoking. Stopping smoking about 10 days before the operation is a positive step for the recovery process. Eyelid plastic surgery is not surgery that requires hospitalization, so you do not need to arrange a companion. However, ice compression and rest are important in the first week after the operation, so arranging your work to take a break for 1 week will help you pass the process comfortably.
On The Day Of The Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid aesthetics is a comfortable operation. On the day of surgery, we expect our patients to comply with the 6 – 8 fasting rule. In the operation to be performed on an empty stomach, your surgeon will visit you in the hospital room before the operation. He will once again share with you the surgical procedure and how long it will take to complete the process. Subsequently, the hospital staff begins to prepare you for surgery.
Immediately in the surgical operation, lines are drawn in the surgical field, which serve as a kind of guide before the operation. These lines are often made while patients are in the operating room. However, in eyelid plastic surgery, drawing is usually done in the operating room with special measuring tools. In particular, we can define the measuring tool used in the drawing of the upper eyelid as a kind of tweezers. Excess skin on the eyelids is taken between the two clamps of the tool, how much skin to be removed is determined and this area is determined with a pen.
After the drawing stage, your surgeon goes through the individual sterilization process and is prepared for the surgery by the operating room staff.
The process begins with skin removal from the drawing area and reshaping of the fat pads. In this part, the incision is made on the upper eyelid, where the eyelid is folded, and on the lower eyelid, from the bottom of the eyelashes. After the fat pads are reshaped and the subcutaneous layers are repaired, the operation is completed by surgically removing the excess skin. Afterwards, the sewing phase is started and finally the operation is completed by sticking small tapes to the operation area.
On the day of the operation, ice compresses are applied to the patient at intervals to minimize possible edema and bruises. However, bruises, swelling and stinging sensations under the eyes are expected in the first few days following the operation.
Eyelid plastic surgeries are operations that do not require hospitalization. A few hours after the surgery, you can be discharged from the hospital after the control of your doctor and you can continue your rest at home.
Eyelid Aesthetic Recovery Period
Even after being discharged from the hospital after surgery, ice compresses around the eyes should be continued for the first 24 hours. 2-3 days after the operation, the patient is called for a control examination. In this control examination, the thin tapes adhered after the surgery are removed. 5-6 days after the operation, the patient can easily return to his social life and start his daily routines. It takes about 6 months for the new eyelids to fully settle and the signs of surgery to disappear.
