What is Gynecomastia?
The large breast form is perhaps a desired appearance for many women, but when it comes to men, the large breast form is unfortunately a condition that causes low self-confidence and negatively affects the lives of men physically and psychologically.
The gynecomastia problem, which we define as the formation of feminine breast tissue in men, is unfortunately one of the most common aesthetic problems today. We say aesthetic because the gynecomastia problem often only causes visual problems and doesn’t constitute a vital health problem for the person.
How Does Gynecomastia Occur?
There may be more than one reason for the formation of feminine breast tissue in men. Although it cannot be diagnosed definitively, some drugs used during and after adolescence, genetic factors and even weight changes can cause gynecomastia problem. As we mentioned above, gynecomastia problem often does not pose a problem in terms of physical health, but it is considered a health problem because it affects the person psychologically.
Gynecomastia, which causes many different problems from the difficulties in choosing a shirt to swimming by hiding on the beaches in the summer, is one of the problems that causes low self-confidence in men not only in social life but also in sexual life.
Although gynecomastia occurs due to the reasons mentioned above, it can occur in two different ways; It is the formation of a feminine breast appearance by enlarging the breast tissue or the formation of a feminine breast appearance as a result of excessive fat accumulation in the chest area.
Although there are solutions for both cases, surgical techniques differ depending on the way gynecomastia occurs.
What Are The Stages Of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, which is defined as a feminine breast appearance in men, is graded in itself, just like breast sagging.
A slight breast size is seen in the first stage gynecomastia problem. There is no sagging or any loosening of the breast skin. A gynecomastia problem of this degree is often resolved with vaser liposuction.
In the second stage gynecomastia problem, there is no sagging in the breast tissue, but there is a larger and more prominent breast appearance compared to a male breast. At this degree, the nipple has not fallen below the nipple line.
The third stage gynecomastia problem is the degree to which sagging of the breast tissue begins. In a gynecomastia problem of this severity, there is loosening of the skin and the nipple falls below the nipple line, causing a partial sagging. At this stage, not only the breast tissue but also the skin is intervened and excess skin is removed.
The fourth and final stage is the stage in which the gynecomastia problem is most severe. At this stage, we can talk about a completely feminine breast form. In addition to the appearance of a large breast, the nipple is inclined downwards, staying below the nipple line. At this stage, loosening and sagging of the skin are also seen.
In addition to these definitions, there are 3 medical terms you may encounter when it comes to gynecomastia. These are: lipomatous, grandular and mixed type. Respectively; they mean an increase in adipose tissue, an increase in breast tissue, and an increase in both breast tissue and adipose tissue.
Gynecomastia Surgery Preparation Process
The preparation process of gynecomastia surgery starts with consultation, just like in other aesthetic operations. When our patients contact us for the solution of their gynecomastia problem, they are first given an appointment for consultation.
When the day of the consultation comes, a general examination is done first. The medical history of the patient candidate is taken and the drugs used, if any, are listed. Drug use is an important process for people planning to have surgery. For example, if there are blood thinners among the drugs they use regularly, the use of these drugs must be suspended, with the knowledge of the doctors who prescribe these drugs. It is important to stop taking blood thinners about 10 days before the operation day.
In addition to medicines, not consuming beverages that have blood thinning effects, such as herbal teas, is one of the issues to be considered during the preparation phase.
In addition to the medical history, certain tests are requested from our patients during the consultation. Patients are informed about when and how all these tests will be done. Gynecomastia surgery is performed with sedation, local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the severity of gynecomastia seen in the patient. For this reason, tests are requested to understand whether the patient has a medical condition that prevents anesthesia.
In addition to all these, smoking should be suspended in the 10-day period before and after gynecomastia surgery, as in every operation. Since the nicotine in cigarettes will disrupt cell regeneration, stopping smoking will speed up the healing process.
Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery is an operation performed with different techniques. As in the first stage, if the fat accumulation is in question, then general anesthesia is not needed. Local anesthesia is sufficient. In such cases, gynecomastia is intervened with the Vaser Liposuction method. By means of special cannulas, the fat in the chest area is destroyed and taken out of the body. The surgery is completed in approximately 45 – 90 minutes. After the operation, the patient is dressed in a special corset and the patient can easily be discharged from the hospital on the same day.
However, if there is excessive growth in breast tissue and even sagging on the skin, in addition to fat accumulation in the breast area in question, then the Vaser Liposuction method is insufficient. In this case, the patient is treated under general anesthesia. Extremely large breast tissue causing gynecomastia is surgically removed. In order to remove the skin deformation in the chest area, the skin is stretched and the excess skin is surgically removed. The nipple is repositioned where it should be and the surgery is completed. It is recommended that patients stay in the hospital for 1-2 days after the operation performed under general anesthesia. In addition, after the operation, the patient is dressed in a special corset to help the chest take its new shape.
In severe gynecomastia problems where the tissue is removed by surgical intervention, a drain is used to follow the patient in a healthier way and to prevent possible blood accumulation in the surgical area.
The corset given after the operation should be worn for about 6-8 weeks. During this process, the chest area should be protected from impacts and the arms should not be forced.
Although gynecomastia surgery is a reliable operation, the duration of the operation may vary depending on the technique and intervention details. However, since the way the whole process will proceed is determined during the consultation, patients and their relatives do not encounter any financial or moral surprises.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Process
Recovery processes vary according to the details of the operation. In a gynecomastia surgery that is completed only with Vaser Liposuction, patients can return to their social lives in a much shorter time. The fact that vaser liposuction is a technology that targets and destroys only fats without damaging neighboring tissues is also a major factor in this. Vaser Liposuction is a state-of-the-art fat removal method that offers a much more precise intervention opportunity compared to classical liposuction, thus providing a high success rate in surgeries. In gynecomastia operations completed with this method, the recovery period is also rapid.
Although a long-term corset should be worn in gynecomastia surgeries where tissue is removed by surgical intervention, mild pain and edema are expected after the operation. These pains can be easily controlled with mild painkillers.
In the first month after the operation, patients shouldn’t do sports other than light walks and they should prioritize rest. However, as the need for corset use will decrease from the second month,they can start sports such as swimming. However, they should still be careful not to overwork the arms and the chest area.
At this point, we find it useful to draw attention to a misunderstood fact. Edema that may occur in the operation area is different from edema that occurs due to water consumption in the body. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid sweat-inducing activities such as saunas or Turkish baths during this period. Such activities do not reduce your edema, they cause the opposite reaction.
